Certified Flight Instructor

In order to provide instructional services in an aircraft, you must earn a separate license, becoming what is known as a "Certified Flight Instructor," or "CFI." Due North Aviation provides the training and experience required to make a safe and efficient flight instructor in helicopters.

What is required to earn a CFI in helicopters?

Pilots earning a CFI must be rated as a Commercial Pilot in Helicopters to earn the CFI License. Although it is a requirement in airplanes to have an Instrument Rating to earn the CFI License, it is not required in helicopters due to the nature of the flying done in helicopters.

How much flight time is required to become a CFI?

The FAA does not specify a specific number of flight hours required to earn the CFI License, but in our experience 10-20 hours of training would be sufficient for pilots with recent experience flying helicopters.

What is covered during training to become a CFI?

Pilots will learn to operate the aircraft from what might be an unfamiliar side of the aircraft, along with a comprehensive study in the "Fundamentals of Instruction" and proper teaching technique, lesson planning, dealing with differing levels of student comprehension. Good flight instructors must be both excellent pilots as well as psychologist, motivator, and educator and our training will emphasize how to combine the flight skills you've learned as a Commercial Pilot with the knowledge areas that will make you a successful CFI.

The specific areas you must be proficient at are outlined in the Practical Test Standards for the Certificated Flight Instructor can be found in the CFI Practical Test Standards.
